Spain travel deals often take travelers to the Costa del Sol beach, with its generic souvenir shops and surf culture. Yet there is much to see in Spain beyond the touristy beaches. Plaza Mayor is another of the cheap hotels in Madrid — and arguably the best of the area discount hotels. The historic exterior has been in place for more than 200 years and is reminiscent of a British pub on the ground level and a colorful traditionally European building on top. Inside, the 33 rooms and one suite feature ensuite bathrooms, satellite television and free wireless internet. The contemporary bar and restaurant is very handsome, with brilliant red furnishings, cozy lighting and polished wood surfaces. The suite features a loft bed area and its own private top-floor sun-deck. It’s also nice to have buffet breakfasts offered on-site, which you can’t find at all the popular hotels. Starting at 3/night, you’re paying a bit more but you receive more amenities and you’re located in an equally bustling part of town.
While you’re staying in cheap hotels in Madrid, make sure you take advantage of all the free things to do there. You can visit the most popular tourist destination, the Museo del Prado for free Tuesdays through Saturdays from 6 – 8 pm or 5 – 8 pm on Sundays. The Museo de Reina Sofia is free Saturday afternoons after 2:30 pm and Sunday mornings until 2.30 pm. Visit Museo Archeológico Nacional on Saturday afternoons and all day on Sunday, or you can see the Museo Tiflológico, which always offers free admission. The Palacio Real is free on Wednesdays and the Museo la de America is free on Sundays. Walk Madrid’s historic district from Puerta del Sol to Playa Mayor to see some of the country’s best architecture or stop in to the bullfighting museum, which is unique to Spain/Madrid travel.
